Rome, Italy CNN —A 22-year-old French woman whose blood-drained body was found in an abandoned church in northern Italy’s Aosta Valley over the weekend had been looking for a haunted house believed to contain ghosts, according to police. There are also two other missing persons cases in the area which police say could be related. Some of the blood had been scraped off the floor and removed from the crime scene, police told CNN. The woman had no documents or cellphone on her when a local resident discovered her decomposing body, police say. The area prosecutor Manlio D’Ambrosi told local media that they are also investigating the presence of a burgundy colored van that was spotted on surveillance footage near the abandoned church last week.

“Is It Good Enough to Fool My Gallerist?” David Salle, one of America’s most thoughtful painters, hoped an A.I. “We are sending the machine to art school,” Salle quipped, before expounding on the principles of light, shadow, depth and volume that good painting requires. Safe to say that nobody would mistake this image for a Salle painting. Salle’s style has changed over the years, which made capturing his essence a little more challenging for an algorithm. Put through the blender of a machine, Salle’s art becomes a remix: a pastiche of pastiches.

Karthik Nachiappan, who researches Indian foreign policy at the National University of Singapore, noted that the country has a growing influence in the Global South, which is mainly made up of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. "Non-alignment has been a primary strategy that has covered Indian foreign policy through the decades," Nachiappan told CNBC. However, India's policy of non-alignment has incrementally transformed into a policy of multi-alignment over the years, Nachiappan added. Don McLain Gill, a geopolitical analyst at De La Salle University, says India has an independent approach to its foreign policy. A New Recipe for a Very Old Hummus
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Sam Sifton | More About Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
There’s some very nice writing about recipes in The New York Times Magazine this week, not surprisingly under the byline of Ligaya Mishan. Her subject is a hummus recipe (above), dating back to 13th century Syria, that Lucien Zayan of the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn served at a dinner series he runs, la Salle A Manger. We don’t have a lot of recipes that are so old. In fact, Ligaya reports, there is no documentation of hummus recipes after the 14th century until the late 19th century. But hummus endured, as Ligaya explained beautifully: “A recipe existed only in the doing, the way that the ‘Odyssey’ once existed only in the telling, made new each time, revised, embellished, its glory subject to the seemingly boundless human capacity for error and its counterpart, invention.”Featured RecipeView Recipe →

This Hummus Holds Up After 800 Years

You take chickpeas, hard and dry, and boil them until their skins loosen and they reveal themselves, tender little hulks with souls of butter. For much of human civilization, recipes were rarely written down, and of those that were, almost none have survived. You might recognize this as hummus. Notably absent from the recipe is garlic, despite its ubiquity in the cooking of the Arab world at the time. It’s not certain exactly when garlic was introduced to the dish: Nasrallah notes that there is no documentation of hummus recipes after the 14th century until the late 19th century.

Protesters outside the Salle Pleyel venue in Paris could be heard chanting "all we want is to knock down Total" and "one, two, three degrees, we have Total to thank." French riot police on Friday fired tear gas at hundreds of climate activists trying to prevent the annual general meeting of oil giant TotalEnergies from taking place. Activists from campaign groups including 350.org, Friends of the Earth France and Scientists in Rebellion had pledged to try to stop the AGM from taking place to denounce TotalEnergies' fossil fuel expansion. Eugene DeMaso, of La Salle, Illinois, said packaging for the cookies sold under Walmart's Great Value label misled reasonable consumers because the cookies' "fudge" contained no milkfat and its "mint" contained no mint ingredients. Rowland also agreed with Walmart that "mint" promised a flavor, not actual mint. The lawsuit said Walmart's cookies sold for at least $1.89 for 10 ounces, and would have sold for less absent the alleged misleading representations.

Speaking ahead of his flight, Marcos said he looked forward to meeting President Xi Jinping and that "the issues between our two countries are problems that do not belong between two friends such as the Philippines and China". Last week, a Philippine foreign ministry official said talks with Xi would include China's actions in the South China Sea. While the Philippines is a defence ally of the United States, under Duterte it set aside a territorial spat over the South China Sea in exchange for Chinese investment. Beijing claims much of the South China Sea, where about $3 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually, with the area becoming a flashpoint for Chinese and U.S. tensions around naval operations. But while De Castro expects the South China Sea issue to be brought up, he does not expect Beijing to alter its position.
